The Rapier was among the civilians as the "Gentleman's sword". It is primarily a stabbing weapon and therefore not effective on a battlefield. The rapier began its development during the 16th century in Spain and Germany.

In Spain, the one-handed sword is known as the "Espada Ropera" and in Germany it was the "Pappenheimer".
