After three prior editions, which were essentially reprints of this Edition, the reference has been completely revised and expanded. Other terms have been incorporated, recorded new images and the whole work was first produced in color. So, the high standard to a good bit has been raised. This Shôtôkan encyclopedia (shôtôkan no hyakka jiten) is designed as a reference guide for the Japanese terminology in the art of karate-dô, and is not a book to learn the technique.
The encyclopedia is published in English, French and Spanish.
The focus of this work is the expressions that are used in the style of Shôtôkan. The complete and clear presentation of all karate techniques, of all competition terms and philosophies of karate in a unique form of Japanese characters (kanji), pronunciation and translation. The content consists of the numbering system and the attack directions of movement, the Grundkata and the higher kata as well as commands, Dôjôregeln, body parts and a richly illustrated part of technology. Still twenty paragraphs of karate by Funakoshi Gichin discusses also the philosophical background of the Shôtôkan, through the Declaration of selected terms, the development of the word karate-Dô, u.v.m. The most important terms and some notes of famous Zen master form completion.
