Kata ist die grundlegende und auch älteste Übungsform im Karate. Die alten Meister entwickelten Bewegungsabläufe von Karatekombinationen, die einen Kampf simulierten, aber gleichzeitig absolute Perfektion und aufrechte Geisteshaltung verlangen - die Kata.
Unter der Leitung von Gichin Funakoshi fand 1948 in der Waseda Universität ein Treffen von Karateschülern der Universitäten Waseda, Keio und Takushoku statt. Ziel war, eine gemeinsame Grundlage und Interpretation der verschiedenen Kata zu finden.
Um eine Kata richtig ausführen zu können, muss man sich über deren Bedeutung im Klaren sein.
- Genaue Kenntnis des Ablaufes einer Kata und Konzentration.
- Exakte Ausführung der einzelnen aufeinanderfolgenden Techniken sowie korrekte Körperhaltung.
- Kime, das heißt Spannung, Schnelligkeit und richtige Atemtechnik genau zum geforderten und richtigen Zeitpunkt.
- Die Kata sollte nicht überhastet, mit richtigem Wechsel von Spannung und Entspannung, Timing und Rhythmus ausgeführt werden.
Kata Bundestrainer Efthimios Karamitsos 7.Dan demonstriert in diesem Film alle 26 Shotokan Katas und die Kata Taikyoku Shodan. Dabei werden jeweils zwei Ansichten dargestellt, von vorne und von der Seite.
Eine kurze Erklärung zu der gezeigten Kata erfolgt immer zu Beginn der Abfolge.

Grand Master Hirokazu Kanazawa was born in 1931 in Iwate (Japan).
At an early age he was interested in various martial arts.
As a student of Takushoku University, he became a student of Masatoshi Nakayama and the founder of Shotokan Karate Gichin Funakoshi.
Since that time he has remained faithful to the Shotokan Karate and holds worldwide Karate-Do training from. In 1978 Kancho Kanazawa the World Federation SKIF (Shotokan Karate International Federation). In 2002, he of the 10th Dan in Shotokan Karate was awarded.
