Undoubtedly one of the first protective parts belonged to the plate, the first in the development had a wooden substructure with a reed, fur or leather clothing, before it was made of metal.

The chainmail (the armor) has already been known in approaches from ancient times and evolved over the Celtic, Germanic and Viking Age as a particularly esteemed body protection, a sword blow often withstood.
The chain shirt has, compared to a normal breastplate, the advantage that it adapts to the body. In order to sit so comfortably on the horse, the chain shirt had side slits. Up to 20,000 rings were processed for chain mail. It can be seen that only wealthy could afford such a fighter body protection. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the sleeves were longer and also included gloves. Against crossbow projectiles and blows with lances the chain mail could not provide adequate protection. Even against the emerging firearms, the chain mail had no chance.
