Der Yawara ist eine Jahrtausende alte Waffe, die ursprünglich als Werkzeug bei den buddhistischen Messen benutzt wurde. Der kriegerische Gebrauch wurde durch das Tanto-Jutsu entwickelt, ohne die Waffe aus der Scheide ziehen zu müssen, um somit Blutungen oder Schnittwunden zu vermeiden. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde dieser kleine Zylinder zu einer extrem effektiven Waffe, sowohl für die persönliche Selbstverteidigung als auch für den polizeilichen Einsatz.
